Scientists from the NIAAA, NIDA, and The Scripps Research Institute discovered that semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist used for diabetes and obesity, reduces alcohol consumption and binge drinking in a rodent model of alcohol misuse. Published in JCI Insight (June 2023), the study highlights the potential of GLP-1 medications in treating alcohol use disorder (AUD), linking overeating and substance use disorders to shared brain mechanisms.
